The World Cup’s final weekend has created a second title race alongside Argentina versus Spain. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé stand on eight goals apiece in the adidas Golden Boot standings, leaving the award open across France’s third-place match against England on Saturday 18 July and Sunday’s Argentina–Spain final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Messi moved into the lead on assists after setting up Lautaro Martínez’s stoppage-time winner in Argentina’s 2-1 semi-final comeback over England on 15 July. FIFA’s current leaderboard lists Messi and Mbappé on eight goals; the usual ranking order is goals first, then assists, then fewer minutes played. That means a level finish on goals does not automatically mean a shared Golden Boot.
The schedule gives both leaders one more opportunity. France face England in Match 103, the third-place play-off at Miami Stadium on 18 July, while defending champions Argentina meet European champions Spain in Match 104 on 19 July. Mbappé can still change the equation before the final; Messi can answer on the tournament’s last day.
There are still outsiders in the wider conversation. England’s Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham had six goals after the semi-finals, but their remaining match is only the Miami play-off. Spain’s attack will also be under the brightest spotlight in the final, although the eight-goal benchmark means a late surge would need to be extraordinary.
For Messi, the award would add another individual marker to a sixth World Cup appearance at age 39. For Mbappé, it is a chance to retain the scoring crown he won in Qatar in 2022. The immediate sporting prize is team silverware, but every goal, assist and minute now carries a second layer of consequence.
